Charles Fort and The Black Sand Beach.

4 Hours
  • Enjoy a scenic drive from Port Zante, viewing Georgian and Victorian Architecture as you drive through Basseterre, continuing on through the coastal villages to the Historic Charles Fort, built in 1672. The first of three coastal defenses built to advance British colonial ambitions protect the maritime trading post at the Pump Bay Harbor, in Sandy Point.
Fort Charles was heavily funded by King Charles 11, took eleven years to complete and was the forerunner of Brimstone Hill Fortress which took 104 years to complete what became known as the Gibraltar of the Caribbean.
In a 50 minutes tour of the facility you will learn about why it was built, the battles won and lost three, retaliation, abandonment, and its function as a leper asylum from 1890 to 1996.
As you journey to your next stop to the black sand beach of Pump Bay, listen as your tour guide incorporate the accounts taken from the ship’s log on then slave ship captain, John Newton (author of the song, Amazing grace). His records speaks to the shipping of 449 enslaved Africans, directly from Senegal to Pump Bay, during the course of three voyages between Liverpool, Senegal and St.Kitts. You will also be shown the anglican rectory, where he once lived for three months.
Thirty minutes gives you a chance to use the rest rooms, patronize the Rum Dog Bar, sink your toes into the one of a kind volcanic sand briefly experiencing the soothing waters of this historically famous black sand beach.
It’s advisable to arm yourselves with sunscreen, beech socks/beach shoes, sunshades cameras, cash or cards.
Your tour continues on to Timothy Hill where you will be mesmerized by the panoramic views of the frigate bay basin and the southeastern peninsula, where two of our neighboring Islands can be clearly seen, when the weather permits. Prepare to capture the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea in one camera frame. Then snap the BEST selfies in the world. A twelve minute drive back to Port Zante, completes your tour.
Step back in time with a visit to a 17th-century rum distillery.
Learn the history and production process of the famous Old Road Rum—complete with a guided tasting session.
